What we eat matters.
The decisions we make in our daily lives can have unseen consequences on the animals around us. Eating animal products, especially in excess, has an impact on the health of the environment and the wellbeing of the animals.
- Did you know the largest meat-processing plant in the world is located 2 hours drive from Elon? Smithfield Foods, Inc. operates the plant in Tar Heel, NC. The plant is capable of processing 32,000 pigs in a single day. In 2008, the processing plant slaughtered 27 million hogs.
- The pigs are confined to gestation crates and are unable to sit or stand comfortably. The pigs do not have the room to turn around. Many suffer physical and psychological stresses, and react by gnawing on the metal crates and experience significant muscle deterioration.
