Major NGO's for Animal Advocacy
The following page is dedicated to providing informative and relevant facts that promote the mission statement's behind the chosen NGO's associated with animal advocacy. The following five Major NGO's are nationally and internationally known. They are as follows:
1. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) http://www.peta.org/ People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is an American animals rights organization based in Norfolk, Virginia, and led by Ingrid Newkirk, its international president. A non-profit corporation with 300 employees and two million members and supporters, it claims to be the largest animal rights group in the world. Its slogan is "animals are not ours to eat, wear, experiment on, or use for entertainment." 2. World Wildlife Foundation (WWF) http://www.worldwildlife.org/home-full.html Saving wildlife is at the core of WWF’s mission. Why? Because animal populations are disappearing at an alarming rate. The diversity of life isn't evenly distributed around the globe. It is concentrated in certain areas, making them a greater priority for conservation. WWF has now refined its focus on 15 places that are of the highest priority, based on the wealth and diversity of life they support, the destructive challenges they face, and our ability to impact them within the next decade.WWF has long known that our entire planet is one delicate and complex set of relationships between species, people, habitats, governments and global market forces. We also know that meaningful conservation cannot take place without focusing on all of them. 3. National Institute for Animal Advocacy (NIFAA) http://www.nifaa.org/ NIFAA’s Mission: TO CREATE a political culture among animal rights and rescue advocates, so we understand that political groups that endorse candidates are a mandatory component of our advocacy. TO TRAIN you to form voting bloc political organizations that win strong laws for animals in your town, city, county and state. TO DEVELOP local leadership among you to lead these voting bloc organizations and win stunning victories for animals. TO INSPIRE rights and rescue charitable groups to form affiliated political groups, and teach them how to do it. 4. Animal Protection Institute (API) (Later renamed Born Free USA, 2007) http://www.bornfreeusa.org/ Born Free USA is a national animal advocacy nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, contributions to which are tax-deductible. Our mission is to end the suffering of wild animals in captivity, rescue individual animals in need, protect wildlife — including highly endangered species — in their natural habitats, and encourage compassionate conservation globally. Every year, millions of animals suffer in fur farms and circus cages. In our campaigns against such cruelties, we use powerful tools including legislation, public education, litigation, and grassroots networking. We also work actively with media to spread the word about challenges facing animals. Our primary campaign areas currently include animals used in entertainment, captive exotic animals, trapping & fur, and the international wildlife trade. 5. American Humane Society (AHS) http://www.americanhumane.org/animals/ The American Humane Association asserts that all animals should be treated humanely throughout their lifespans. The Film and Television Unit specifically oversees animals used during media productions. The American Humane Association is sanctioned by the Screen Actors Guild to oversee a production's humane care of animals. Because of this, the AHA may choose to issue the end credit disclaimer "No Animals Were Harmed in the Making of This Motion Picture." The AHA may be able to report on the animal action during filming when public concerns arise or animal accidents happen on a particular set. American Humane Association acts as the animals’ safety representative, but it protects both animal actors and cast/crew members interacting with the animals. They ensure that budgets and time constraints do not compromise the safety or care of the animals. Accidents and deaths due to natural causes can happen. American Humane Association verifies what happened and serves as the professional and objective witness. They also respond to rumors and accusations both on and off set for the distribution life of a production. |

PETA Captures a video of animal mistreatment
PETA captures video of circus performers beating their animals before a performance. It's pretty clear not only by the captions in the video, but by the reactions of the elephants that they are quite uneasy about being whipped in the face. PETA asks for donations to help resolve issues like this.
Global warming and climate change affects humans and animals alike: WWF
The World Wildlife Foundation stipulates the issues associated with global warming and global climate change. The video depicts animals and humans as members of the same community, all affected by the onset of climate change. We are responsible as humans for the well being of not only ourselves, but our animal neighbors

NEWS: Undercover Investigation by PETA Reveals Cow Suffering for Land O'Lakes
A PETA undercover investigation inside a Land O'Lakes supplier facility in Pennsylvania revealed routine neglect and cruelty to cows whose milk is used for the giant company's products. Over the course of several months, the investigation documented deplorable, filthy conditions for cows on the farm, such as pens that were filled with deep excrement (see video and photos), and cows who suffered from ailments and conditions so severe that they collapsed and became "downers" but were not put out of their misery or given veterinary care in a timely manner, if at all.
Land O'Lakes "inspected" the farm in June 2009—during the course of PETA's investigation—and even noted that there were areas in need of cleaning (including the milking parlor walls!) but approved the facility nonetheless. Cows on dairy factory farms are not given much more than the numbered tag that is punched through their ears to identify them. Read more about what happened to a few of the cows who lived and died miserably at one such farm. The farm's owner and one of his sons were caught on video electro-shocking cows who were in too much pain to stand up. One of the farmer's sons kicked a cow and jabbed her with the blade of a pocket knife. The dairy industry's standard forms of cruelty also led to suffering for these cows. In order to make milking easier, cows' tails were amputated by tightly binding them with elastic bands, causing the skin and tissue to slowly die and slough off and leaving the animals unable to swat away flies, which, in addition to tormenting the cows, also led to the spread of disease. Tail-docking is unnecessary and cruel, which is why it has been condemned by the American Veterinary Medical Association and banned in California. Dairy farmers don't allow cows―whose pregnancies last for nine months, just like human pregnancies―to spend any significant time with their calves, who are taken away from their mothers shortly after birth. Cows are intelligent animals who can remember things for a long time, and they have the capacity to worry about the future. PETA's investigation also reveals cows and calves who were kept in pens and barns whose floors were covered with deep excrement, which caused foot and hoof problems and fostered the spread of disease. Calves rescued from the farm had pneumonia, "manure scald," ringworm, pinkeye, and parasites. Some cows suffered respiratory distress and had pus-filled nasal discharge streaming down their faces. Abscesses were common on the farm—some of them burst and oozed pus, even as cows were being milked, as can be seen in our video. World-renowned meat and dairy industry expert Dr. Temple Grandin, after reviewing the footage, said, "The conditions are absolutely atrocious. ... It was obvious that the place was seldom cleaned and ... that many sick animals were not receiving veterinary treatment. ... The dairy manager totally NEGLECTED his animals. ... Many animals suffer greatly." Despite overwhelming video and photographic evidence of lame, thin cows left to suffer and die and a cow whose teat was banded and left to rot and fall off—as well as expert testimony that all this constituted cruelty—these suppliers, who abused and severely neglected the cows in their care, avoided a criminal conviction with misleading arguments and excuses, proving that current laws are not enough to protect cows on dairy factory farms. So now it's up to you to help these cows. Demand that Land O'Lakes implement and enforce a 12-point animal welfare plan to govern all cooperative members' dairy-farming operations, which will eliminate some of the worst abuses to cows raised for their milk. Write to Land O'Lakes Senior Vice President Dan Knutsonnow and urge him to implement the plan today. Of course, the best way for you to help prevent cows from suffering these abuses is to go vegan and stop consuming dairy products. Sign our pledge to be vegan for 30 days, and we'll send you all the resources that you need to get started. |
